The TaeKwonDo Oath
The oath is taken by all students who wish to train in TaeKwonDo, the goal of the oath is for the student to fully realise and commit to the underlying principles and responsibility that training in Martial Arts and especially TaeKwonDo brings. There are two variant’s of the oath. The first is the association oath, and second the Oath practised by many organisations worldwide.
The Association Oath:
As a student of TaeKwonDo, I solemnly pledge to abide by the rules and regulations of the TaeKwonDo Association, to strive always to be modest, courteous and respectful to all members especially my seniors. To put the art into use only for self defence or defence of the weak and never to abuse my knowledge of the art.
Students are expected to learn and recite the association oath in readiness for Grading examinations.
The traditional Oath:
I shall observe the tenets of TaeKwonDo
I shall respect the instructors and seniors
I shall never misuse TaeKwonDo
I shall be a champion of freedom and justice
I shall build a more peaceful world
The students who wish to train in TaeKwonDo, must learn the tenets and try to live by the tenets and in doing so become a better person. Senior students should also display the tenets as an example to junior students.
To be polite to all especially one's instructor, seniors and fellow students.
To be honest with oneself and with others. One must be able to understand the principles that distinguish right from wrong.
To achieve a goal, whether it is a higher grade or a technique, one must not stop trying, one must persevere.
To lose one’s temper when performing techniques against an opponent can be very dangerous and shows lack of control. To be able to live, work and train within one’s capability shows good self control.
To show courage when you and your principles are pitted against overwhelming odds.
REMEMBER (C.I.P.S.I) Courtesy; Integrity; Perseverance; Self Control; Indomitable Spirit.
